The Galleon
Galleons were used as cargo and war ships. They were more narrow and stable in the ocean than carraks. They were cheaper and much more armored. Galleons generally carried three or more masts, some of them were with latin sails. One of the largest and most famous Portuguese galleon was the São João Baptista (nicknamed Botafogo, "Spitfire"), a 1,000-ton galleon built in 1534, said to have carried 366 guns.
The painting is based on the Routemap of the Red Sea, created by João de Castro during the Portuguese expedition to Suez (Egypt) in 1541
