The Carrack
Set sail with this handpainted ceramic tile featuring a stunning ship design. Inspired by traditional azulejo artistry, it captures the beauty of maritime adventures with intricate details and vibrant cobalt colour.
The carrack or nau was a three - or four-masted ship. It had a high rounded stern with large aftcastle, forecastle, and bowsprit at the stem. It was first used by the Portuguese and later by the Spanish. Carraks grew from 200 tons capacity in the fifteenth century to 2000 tons in the sixteenth century. The capacity of carraks allowed merchants to minimize cost for carrying commodities for long distances and their protection.
The painting is based on the Routemap of the Red Sea, created by João de Castro during the Portuguese expedition to Suez (Egypt) in 1541
